Control over the family law system should be given to the states and territories, rather than the Commonwealth, under a radical proposal from the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC).
The sector is widely regarded as painstakingly slow and prohibitively costly, putting added strain on vulnerable families going through breakdowns.
The ALRC was given the task of reviewing the family law system in September 2017 by then-attorney-general George Brandis — the first review since the Family Court was established in the late 1970s.
