Release of research into overseas commercial surrogacy boosts the calls made by some local family lawywers to review Australia’s ban on commercial surrogacy. The study found that the rates of multiple pregnancies, premature births and miscarriages were higher than would have been the case in Australia. Coming on the heels of the baby Gammy scandal, it increases pressure on the Government to respond.
The article, from the Guardian goes on to quote various experts including Jenni Millibank, a professor of law at the University of Technology in Sydney, who backs a “harm-minimisation” approach to surrogacy, where Australia learned from commercial surrogacy practices elsewhere without replicating them. “I’m not arguing for a commercial market, but for a reasonable compensation for surrogates based on the burden and risks they carry,” she said.
