Dramatic headlines about a rush of older couples to get divorced may be overstated. The statistics do show people are waiting longer to get divorced, however most divorces are still within the first 10 years of marriage. The divorce rate in general is at about 2.3 per 1000 people, a long slow downward trend from the high of 4.9 following the Family Law Act 1975. The statistics also suggest that defacto relationships with children are twice as likely to break up as marriages with children.
